Treatment choices
There are many different forms of refractive surgery. The two most common procedures are LASEK and LASIK. Your surgeon will advise which treatment is most suitable for you at your consultation.
LASEK
Lasek is performed by first loosening the skin on the surface of the eye with a drop of alcohol and gently brushing it aside temporarily. The laser reshapes the surface over 10 to 40 seconds and the skin is rolled back into position. A contact lens is placed onto the eye for 5 days to reduce any discomfort as the skin heals.
LASIK
Lasik is the most common treatment and the treatment of choice for patients with higher prescriptions. Using an automated instrument a thin layer of the cornea is lifted to create a flap and the underlying surface reshaped with the laser prior to repositioning the flap. Because the surface skin is disturbed less, there is less discomfort than LASEK and a more rapid recovery. Most patients experience a marked improvement in vision within 24 hours.
A detailed description and explanation of all benefits and risks will be provided at your consultation.
WAVEFRONT TECHNOLOGY
Laser technology is continually improving. The latest generation of Wavefront guided laser technology was developed to overcome side-effects such as night-time glare associated with earlier treatment modalities. This system utilises advanced technology to produce an individually customised treatment. Optilase offers this Wavefront treatment called Custom-Vue to all suitable patients. It can be performed with Lasik or Lasek procedures. According to the American FDA trial Wavefront treatment has an increased likelihood of achieving 20/20 vision and the potential for improved visual quality and contrast compared with standard treatment. We will provide detailed patient information with our assessment and consultation. Not all patients are suitable for Wavefront treatment.
