Guy T Smith BSc (hons), FRCOphth
Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon


Dr. Smith qualified from St Thomas’ Hospital in London with a first class degree in Neuroscience and honours in Surgery. After 6 months of Neurosurgery he began his ophthalmic training. His registrar training was based at Moorfield’s eye hospital in London, England. During his first year at Moorfield’s Eye Hospital (1999) he worked in the refractive surgery department and began performing photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) under the supervision of Mr Julien Stevens, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon. As a registrar he was trained in cataract, vitreo-retinal, corneo-refractive. In 2003 he carried out a fellowship in Refractive surgery at Moorfield’s Eye Hospital. He is qualified in the use of the VISX excimer laser platform, Custom Vue Wavefront technology and the Moria M2 Microkeratome.


In 2004 Dr. Smith was appointed as Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon with a sub-speciality interest in cataract and cornea refractive surgery at the Great Western Hospital, Swindon, England. He is also the educational supervisor for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK) at the Great Western Hospital.


He has numerous research papers published in the medical literature and has presented his research at scientific conferences in the UK, Europe and USA.


Dr. Smith has full registration with the Medical Council of Ireland and the General Medical Council in the UK. He is on the specialist register as an Ophthalmologist in both Ireland and the United Kingdom. He is currently a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the British Society of Refractive Surgeons, the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and the American Academy of Ophthalmologists.

 

Arthur Nylander, FRCS, FRCOphth, DO.
Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon

 

Dr. Nylander qualified from the University of Ibadan, in Nigeria. He traveled to the United Kingdom for postgraduate studies in Ophthalmology. His training to be an Ophthalmologist took him to various centers across the United Kingdom. These centers included:

  • The Tenants Institute of Ophthalmology, Western Infirmary Glasgow
  • The West of England Eye Infirmary, Exeter
  • The University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff Wales
  • The Royal Hallamshire Hospital Sheffield.

 

Dr Nylander obtained his Diploma in Ophthalmology from the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland. He holds the Fellowship in Ophthalmology from the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Glasgow and the Royal College of Ophthalmologist, London. He also has a fellowship in Corneal & Anterior segment from the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield.

Dr. Nylander started laser refractive surgery in 1992 and to date as performed over five thousand laser procedures for refractive surgery. These include PRK, LASEK & LASIK procedures.

In 1996 he was appointed as Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon with sub specialist interest in cataract, cornea and anterior segment and Oculoplastic surgery at the Burnley NHS Trust (Now East Lancs NHS Trust) in Lancaster, U.K. He is currently college tutor of the Trust.

 

He is an examiner in Ophthalmology for:

  • The University of Manchester Medical School
  • The Royal College of Ophthalmologist, U.K.
  • The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, U.K.

 

Dr. Nylander has full registration with the Medical Council of Ireland AND general Medical Council in the U.K. He is on the Specialist Registrar as an Ophthalmologist in the United Kingdom. He is currently a member of:

  • American Academy of Ophthalmologist
  • United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons
  • British Society of Refractive Surgeons
  • European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons
  • International Refractive Society.
He is also a council member of the United Kingdom & Ireland Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons

 

 


Rajiv Maini, BSc (Hons), MBBS, FRCOphth
Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon

 

Mr. Maini qualified from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School in 1991 with prizes in ophthalmology and paediatrics, having completed research projects in eye disease in the South Pacific.


He trained in ophthalmology in Scotland, Cambridge, Australia and London, at St Mary’s, Hammersmith and Moorfields Eye Hospitals. He has completed fellowships in Cornea and Refractive Surgery and Oculoplastic surgery and has spent the last five years working at consultant level with an interest in corneal and cataract surgery at Charing Cross Hospital in London.

 

He has extensive experience in all aspects of corneal surgery including Excimer Laser refractive and therapeutic treatments, complex corneal and cataract surgery. He is qualified in the use of the VISX Excimer Laser platform, CustomVue Wavefront technology and the Moria M2 Microkeratome.

 

Mr. Maini has completed several projects in laboratory and clinical research and has published numerous articles in internationally renowned journals. He is a member of the Microsurgical Skills Faculty at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

 

Mr. Maini has full registration with the Medical Council of Ireland and the General Medical Council in the UK. He is on the specialist register as an Ophthalmologist in both Ireland and the United Kingdom.
