Making the decision to have laser eye surgery and then recovering afterward can be an emotional rollercoaster, but it is one that is well worth it. With Optilase, you’ll be backed by over 20 years of experience.
What is Laser Eye Surgery?
There are a few different types of laser eye surgery out there, but two stand out as the most popular—LASIK and PRK. In both LASIK and PRK, a laser is used to reshape the outer tissue of the eye, in order to produce clearer, crisper vision.
The difference between the two? In LASIK, a flap is created on the cornea and the tissue underneath is reshaped. In PRK, the surgeon removes a thin layer of the cornea altogether, reshapes the tissue, and the surface layer grows back and smooths out over time. PRK does have a longer recovery time and your vision improves over the course of a few months until it is crystal clear, instead of just a few days like with LASIK. We at Optilase will help you decide what’s best for you and your needs.
Before your surgery
Before any laser equipment goes anywhere near your eyes, you will meet with one of our highly qualfiied doctors for a pre-op appointment to discuss your options, see if you’re a candidate for surgery, and determine your current vision.
Once your appointment for surgery is scheduled, you will be asked to not wear contacts for at least a week and began the prescribed drops to prep for your procedure.
The day of your surgery
Understandably, some people get nervous on the day of their laser eye procedure but, at Optilase, you can rest assured you’re in the safe hands and capable care of our team, consisting of your consultant ophthalmic Surgeon, nurses, laser technicians and other professional support staff members.
We always ask our patients to bring a close friend or family member along on the day of the procedure.
Your laser eye treatment takes, on average, seven minutes per eye. It’s a very short procedure with a lasting, life-changing outcome.
Following the operation, you can relax while our nurses explain everything about the aftercare programme. They will give you a post-operative information pack containing eye drops and a schedule of when to take them. This will also include our 24-hour patient helpline number should you need any more information.
Post-operative care
We offer a free Lifetime Care Guarantee as part of our on-going commitment to patients and provide you with a thorough aftercare programme for the 12 months following your laser eye surgery procedure. Depending on the individual, this will contain an average of four post-operative appointments to attend throughout the year.
After the first year of check-ups, you’ll be discharged from our aftercare programme, but don’t be a stranger – our doors are always open if you’re ever unsure of anything or have any questions regarding the treatment.
