Having problems with your eyesight lately? Struggling with your near vision or find yourself squinting or having problems with fine print? As we get older we can lose the sharpness of our near vision, causing problems with clarity of fine print up close which can be very troublesome and debilitating. These symptoms might mean that everyday tasks like reading the newspaper or a text might become a little more difficult. If this is the case for you, then you might agree that life is too short to not find solutions to problems like these.

So what’s the solution? Well the good news is that if you do suffer with near vision problems, Reading Vision Correction might just be the answer.

Optilase, Ireland’s No.1 Private Eye Clinic, has been treating patients with these eye issues for years so it’s fair to say they know a thing or two about what you might be experiencing. Here we take a look at just what’s happening with your sight and answer any questions you might have on Reading Vision Correction, and how it might just bring you back to near perfect vision.

My near vision isn’t what it used to be, what’s happening?
Once the sharpness of our vision goes and you start to experience issues reading labels, or the newspaper it’s a sure sign that your sight could benefit from some treatment. And if you’re aged between 40 and 65, you’re in good company as this is the age group where most people experience this loss of crispness and clarity of vision, a term that’s called Presbyopia.

The technical explanation for this condition describes it as the loss or ability to focus on near objects as the eye ages, and the symptoms occur when the eye’s natural lens loses its flexibility and stiffens with age.

The condition is the reason that reading glasses become necessary, even for people who have excellent distance vision. But the good news - Reading Vision Correction can mean that your days of squinting and being overly reliant on reading glasses are numbered.

What’s the difference between Laser Eye Surgery and Reading Vision Correction?
Many people struggle to work out the difference between the two but basically, Laser Eye Surgery is carried out to correct problems related to the cornea. Generally speaking, the surgery is suitable for people between the ages of 18-65 and corrects Long-sightedness, Short-sightedness and Astigmatism.

However if you are over the age of 40 wearing reading glasses, the problem is usually related to the lens of the eye. As the eye ages, the lens becomes hard and loses its gel-like flexibility. The muscles surrounding the lens also become weaker and as a result the eye cannot focus on fine print. If this is the case with your sight, then Reading Vision Correction is the solution you’ve been waiting for.

Worried that you’re not sure which surgery is right for you? Don’t worry about that, the team at Optilase will bring you through a free consultation to assess your sight, and this will determine the type of treatment or surgery your sight needs. Optilase also offers combination procedures whereby they can correct problems relating to the cornea and reading vision problems using a combination of Laser Eye Surgery and Reading Vision Correction treatments, if your individual sight problem needs this treatment.

How do I know I need Reading Vision Correction?
If you are aged between 40 and 65 and you have trouble reading fine print clearly, there;’s a high likelihood that you have Presbyopia and may need this treatment, but as with any symptoms it’s always good to seek professional recommendation, and that’s what having a free consultation with a Private Eye Clinic is a good idea - you’ll leave informed and with viable options, no matter what your assessment determines.

I’ve had Laser Eye Surgery in the past, but I’m still having problems with fine print. Why is this?
Laser Eye Surgery corrects a variety of conditions, by correcting the shape of your cornea. Reading vision problems are caused by an ageing of the lens of the eye and a weakening of the eye’s muscles and is a completely different condition. Regardless of you having previously had Laser Eye Surgery, the majority of people will still be reading glasses because essentially the complaint comes from a different part of your eye.

Presbyopia is quite a specific issue, and it only affects people after age 40; usually becoming quite noticeable by age 45. It’s solely due to ageing of the eye, so if you are younger than 40 and you have issues with close vision, you’re better suited for Laser Eye Surgery, as your problems require a correction of the cornea. If you are older than 65, it is possible that you have complications other than presbyopia which alter your underlying prescription needs – for
instance, cataracts. But don’t worry, whatever is the best option for your sight will be investigated at your initial consultation with our team. Your sight is in the best hands possible as soon as you walk through the doors of Thérapie.

Is there any other way for me to deal with Presbyopia other than Reading Vision Correction?
Aside from reading glasses or contact lenses, there’s a type of laser surgery procedure called mono-vision correction which can sometimes correct both near and far vision but not all patients are suitable candidates for this procedure.

Due to major technological advancements, patients have an alternative to reading glasses and mono-vision, in the form of Multifocal lens replacement. During your consultation, your Optometrist will be able to assess which option is best suited to your vision.

Like most treatments, a rule patients selection criteria applies for Reading Vision Correction. Generally speaking this is to be aged between 40-65, wearing reading glasses for at least two years, difficulty focusing on print close up, have to hold items far away to see them clearly and may suffer from eye strain or blurred vision. Having a cataract can be very debilitating, in fact many people suffer greatly for some time before deciding that the next step is to have surgery to regain normal, clear vision. Is now the time for you to think a little more about the advantages of cataract surgery? If your thought process is still unsure then maybe it’s time to get some facts on the popular surgery before you go any further.

So just what are cataracts? Essentially they are cloudy patches in the lens, which is the transparent structure at the front of your eye. They can make your vision blurred or misty and can develop in one or both eyes, and often one eye can often be more affected than the other.

They can appear when you are in your 40’s or 50’s, and usually start to affect your sight when you are in your 60’s, in fact cataracts are generally age-related. But they can also appear if you’ve had radiation treatments, diabetes, corticosteroid medications or any type of eye trauma.

Optilase is Ireland’s leading private eye surgery clinic, and as one of the first private clinics to be established in the country, is renowned for providing exceptional eye surgery in Ireland. With almost twenty years experience, and the country’s leading Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeons, Laser Optometrists and Medical Staff working on the Optilase team, there’s no better place to find out a little bit more about cataracts and make an assessment on the next step for your sight.

Beginning your journey
First things first - do you think you might have a cataract or are you unsure? There are many simple signs and signals to tell you that you may have a cataract. To start with you might be experiencing subtle changes to your vision, such as loss of contrast sensitivity or a loss of colour perception. This basically means that you may notice that colours are beginning to look faded and dull, and also that you have trouble seeing in low-contrast situations, for example at night.

If these are early signs that you recognise, it’s a good idea to make an appointment with an eye clinic like Optilase, who will assess your symptoms at a free consultation. They will also assess your sight overall and will discuss the possibility of surgical removal of your cataract with you. There’s no commitment, and it’s a great way to have a professional assessment on your sight, and give you some options to remedy whatever might be having an effect on your vision. Remember it’s never too early or late to have your cataract removed, so there really is no time like the present.

Cataracts are quite common, generally affect those over 40 and are the leading cause of impaired vision throughout the world. It is estimated that over half of all people over 65 have some cataract development in one or both eyes. So know you’re not alone, millions of people across the World have cataract surgery every year. In fact, cataract surgery is one of the most common and quickest forms of surgery. And most people are able to return to their usual daily routine 24 hours after having the operation, let’s find out a little bit more.

Debating surgery
Whether you’ve just had the onset of symptoms, or have been experiencing the signs and signals of cataract for a while there’s really no time like the present to find out more about surgery that really could alter the everyday quality of your life.

Phillip McGlade, CEO with Optilase would encourage anyone experiencing signs of cataract to make an appointment to learn more, ‘We’ve treated thousands of patients with cataract, and post surgery most patients say that the thing they love the most is that they can return with ease to their everyday routines. In the past, people with cataracts were encouraged to wait until the condition was so bad that they could hardly see. But that's not the case anymore, now surgery to remove a cataract can be done at any stage of development. So don’t waste any more time suffering with bad vision. You’ll never regret making a call today to learn a little bit more about how you can restore your sight, and your quality of life.’

The procedure to remove a cataract usually lasts 30-45 minutes, and vision is improved almost immediately. Stronger glasses don’t improve your vision

Phillip says that a common question the team in Optilase get all the time is whether or not the surgery is painful, ‘No, the good news is that it is not at all painful. Most patients describe a mild sensation of pressure around the eye. Cataract surgery involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with a clear synthetic implant called an intraocular lens (IOL). The focusing power of the IOL is chosen by your surgeon to reduce dependence on glasses after surgery.’

Life after surgery
There’s no doubt about it, life after surgery will look a lot different for you. Free of blurred vision, difficulty reading at night, and colour changes, you should regain great sight.

There are some practical things to consider after surgery, we asked the team in Optilase to fill in the blanks for us.

First up was some great advice to take it easy for the first two or three days after the surgery, like any operation you’ll need time for your eye to heal and to rest. Try not to rub or touch your eye in the days after surgery, it might seem like obvious advice but it’s important.

Next up, driving. Most patients can drive within 48 hours after the operation – the general advice is that you can start driving when you feel comfortable doing so. It is a good idea to avoid driving long distances in the first week, as your eye will probably feel strained after the surgery. The team in Optilase recommend wearing sunglasses to minimise the effect of sensitivity to bright lights and sunlight in the first few weeks after surgery.

Heavy gym workouts are also generally not recommended for the first week. There is no issue with gentle treadmill use or walking. So that’s it, there are a few things off limits for the first few days and week, but trust us - it will be worth it!

The signs and the symptoms
Once the sharpness of our vision goes and you start to experience issues reading labels, or the newspaper it’s a sure sign that your sight could benefit from some treatment. But the good news - Reading Vision Correction can mean that your days of squinting and being overly reliant on reading glasses are numbered. So what are you waiting for, it’s time to find out more.

Taking the first steps towards Reading Vision Correction
Whatever your symptoms if you are having issues with your sight the best way forward is always to have a professional consultation. Optilase are market leaders across the Island of Ireland in private eye care, and they offer a free, no strings attached consultation with one of their Optometrists so that you can find out more about the treatment.

Phillip McGlade, Chief Executive Officer with Optilase explains the importance of finding the right provider for you, ‘ As with any medical treatment it’s vital that you get the right team behind you as you embark on your journey. Our team of Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeons, Laser Optometrists and Medical Staff, are all focused on providing the very best laser eye treatment available, using the latest and most sophisticated technology.

‘Presbyopia is quite a specific issue, and it only affects people after age 40; usually becoming quite noticeable by age 45. Your Free Consultation
So what exactly happens when you visit Optilase for a free consultation on Reading Vision Correction? You’ll be glad to know that it’s very straight forward. First of all a Laser Optometrist will carry out a series of eye examinations to determine your suitability. They will then explain in detail the processes involved and answer any questions you may have.

Laser Eye Surgery V Reading Vision Correction
Phillip explained that many patients are curious as to the difference between both treatments, ‘Laser Eye Surgery is performed in order to correct problems related to the cornea. Generally speaking, laser eye surgery is suitable for people between the ages of 18-65 and corrects Long-sightedness, Short sightedness and Astigmatism. In people over the age of 40 wearing reading glasses, the problem is usually related to the lens of the eye.

As the eye ages, the lens becomes hard and loses its gel-like flexibility. The muscles surrounding the lens which in a young eye can help the lens to focus also become weaker and as a result the eye cannot focus on fine print - or what we now know to be Presbyopia.’

Optilase offer combination procedures whereby they can correct problems relating to the cornea and reading vision problems using a combination of laser eye surgery and reading vision correction treatments, if your individual sight problem determines a need for this treatment.

Learn more about Laser Eye Surgery with Optilase, Ireland’s No.1 private eye surgery provider

Some might say that there are two types of people in this World, those who have always had a problem with their sight and those who have never had to wear glasses or contacts! Unfortunately dear reader, there are more of us with bad sight than we might care to admit (writer included!)

But there are options, right? Yes. A procedure like Laser Eye Surgery, is from the outside a very attractive option - no more contact lenses, no more glasses, the idea of waking up to good sight every morning sounds amazing right! But is it too good to be true? Optilase, Ireland’s No.1 provider of Laser Eye Surgery takes us through what a typical patient journey might look like and gives us some food for thought on the life changing treatment.

Biting the bullet
Like all life changing surgeries, deciding to go ahead with Laser Eye Surgery is a big decision, but what do you need to know in advance of this? And is there anything you can do to prepare yourself for the surgery? Phillip McGlade, CEO with Optilase urges everyone to visit a professional provider for an initial assessment. ‘Having a consultation with an Optometrist is a great place to start. Firstly they will assess your sight to determine if laser eye surgery is the right solution for you. We offer a free consultation to every customer who is interested in Laser Eye Surgery, so that patients can arm themselves with information about the procedure. We believe that every patient should be knowledgeable and comfortable about surgery before embarking any further, and that’s just what our medical team can offer once you walk through our doors. We’re delighted to offer this important service for free.’

On your way to 20/20 vision
First up, it’s time to talk about suitability. Afterall, you need to be suitable for the surgery before going ahead. The good news is that even if you were not suitable previously for the treatment, you may be suitable now thanks to rapidly changing technology. In fact, the odds are stacked in your favour now as it’s thought that 3 out of 4 people are now suitable for Laser Eye Surgery.

If suitability is something that you are concerned about, try not to worry as it will be one of the first things your Optometrist will discuss with you. Brace yourself for the amazing change that Laser Eye Surgery will bring. Who wouldn’t want a chance for better sight and a whole new lease of life? Your life changing surgery awaits.

No holding you back
Feel like you’ve got a thousand questions? No worries, that's what your initial assessment is for. Next up the Laser Optometrist will explain in detail the processes involved and answer any questions you may have about the surgery before and after. It’s a fast appointment too - the whole assessment takes approximately one hour to complete, and is a great way to find out if you want to start the journey as when you leave your free consultation, you’ll be armed with all the facts you need. If you do decide to go ahead then during the consultation a pre-operative consultation will be arranged with your Surgeon.

So if you’ve been thinking about Laser Eye Surgery, but are still juggling glasses and contact lenses to be able to see the world clearly, take the first step. You won’t regret it.

In control and taking things to the next stage
There’s no greater feeling than having answers to the questions you once had. Once you’ve had your initial consultation and came away with the information you need, your next step is to meet your surgeon. Phillip tells us that this is a crucial stage for most patients, ‘After meeting the Optometrist patients generally feel much more in control of the situation. They now have answers to the questions they may have had, and they know how the process unfolds - what happens in the surgery and how we take our patients through a rigorous
aftercare programme.’

So what is Optilase’s advice for anyone who still has questions after their initial meeting? Phillip says it’s important to feel a rapport with your provider, and this includes having open conversations about any additional worries or questions that still remain.

‘Patients should remember that this is an important surgery, and that they should not go ahead with any surgery without having all their concerns explored. Laser Eye Surgery has never been as successful or safe, but every concern from a patient is worth talking about. Go back to your provider and have an open conversation with them, that’s something you’ll never regret’.

Meeting your medical team
Once you’re watertight on all elements of the procedure, meeting your surgeon is the next important step in the process. Here they will carry out a further eye exam and give the final approval required for surgery to go ahead. They’ll talk you through the technical aspects of your Laser Eye Surgery and resolve any additional questions or queries. Once you’re happy that you understand everything and you’re happy to proceed, the team will then go through all of the necessary paperwork and confirm the date and time of your procedure.

But what can patients expect on their surgery day, ‘In our care you can rest assured you’re in the safe and capable care of our team - Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, nurses, laser technicians and other professional support staff members. Your Laser Eye treatment takes, on average, seven minutes per eye. It’s a very short procedure with a lasting, life-changing outcome. Trust me when I say you’ll never look back.’ says Phillip.

‘Following the operation, you can relax while the Optilase team explains everything about the aftercare programme. They’ll give you a post-operative information pack containing eye drops and a schedule of when to take them. This will also include a 24 hour patient helpline number should you need any more information.

So there you have it. Is it time to take a step in the direction of the best sight you’ve ever had? There’s only one way to find out, and we believe that is by meeting medical professionals who can examine your sight, give you information and their assessment on your personal sight, and go from there. As the old saying goes, you have nothing to lose, only gain.

But don’t despair, the odds are stacked in your favour, as 85% of people are now suitable for laser eye surgery thanks to rapidly advancing technology.

Here Optilase, Ireland’s No.1 Eye Surgery providers take us through patient suitability, and what you need to think about before starting your Laser Eye Surgery journey.

Where to start
Wondering how you’ll know if you are suitable for the treatment? In short, it’s impossible to really know without visiting Optilase for an initial assessment. The good news is that now, more than 4 out of 5 people, or 85% of people can have laser eye surgery even if they’ve previously been turned down for treatment. So thanks to the speed of technological advances, there’s a good chance that you’ll be suitable too. And who wouldn’t want to improve a wide range of prescriptions, including short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism?

So if you’ve been thinking about Laser Eye Surgery, but are still juggling glasses and contact lenses to be able to see the world clearly, take the first step. It’s time to book a no-obligation consultation with Optilase now.

Is there anything that might make me an unsuitable candidate?

Generally speaking there are a few factors that may make you unsuitable for the treatment like prescriptions stronger than -10 or +5, or having a squint or a lazy eye. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is necessary to wait until 6 months postpartum before starting your treatment.

But whatever you think of your suitability, the best advice is always to get professional advice - and your next step should be to go to Optilase for a free no obligation consultation to professionally assess your eyes, it will cost you nothing but your time.

What will happen at my initial assessment?
As Ireland’s premier private eye surgery the team at Optilase knows that not everyone is suitable for Laser Eye Surgery, and so to determine your suitability they offer a free laser eye surgery consultation.

Your journey with Optilase begins when you attend your initial assessment. One of their Laser Optometrists will meet with you and spend the next hour thoroughly examining and testing your eyes. You will find out if you are a suitable candidate, what treatment will be best for your eyes, and how much exactly it will cost. It’s important to note that you will not be able to drive after your assessment for at least 6-8 hours.

They will then explain in detail the processes involved and answer any questions you may have and the whole assessment takes approximately one hour to complete. At the end of the consultation a pre-operative consultation is then arranged with your Surgeon.

How is Laser Eye Surgery performed?
The idea behind laser eye surgery is to produce small changes in the surface layers of the cornea, which in turn produce significant changes in the way the eye focuses light.

To do this, we use the most technologically-advanced lasers available to subtly reshape your cornea, transforming your vision and giving you the joy of clearer and sharper sight. The procedure begins with anaesthetic eye drops being applied, which quickly numb the eye.

The laser works in a matter of seconds, sending pulses of laser beams onto your cornea to reshape any imperfections. Most patients experience improved vision within a few days, though full recovery can take up to a week. It depends upon a range of factors, including the speed at which you naturally heal.

A little bit about the different types of Laser Eye Surgery
There are two types of laser eye procedures called LASIK and LASEK/PRK. The key difference between these procedures involves the method of preparing the cornea. LASEK, also referred to as PRK, was the first type of laser eye surgery for vision correction and is the predecessor to the popular LASIK procedure.

LASIK laser eye surgery treatment involves creating a very thin circular ‘flap’ in this outer layer of the cornea, using a laser surgical tool (femtosecond laser). In LASEK surgery, instead of using a laser, the surgeon simply loosens the top layer of cells of the cornea using a special solution.

When you visit Optilase for your free consultation we will be able to determine which type of surgery is best suited to you.

How long does the treatment take and is it permanent?
The laser vision correction itself takes around 7 minutes per eye. Between preparation, treatment and aftercare, you should expect to stay in the clinic for up to 2 hours on the day of your procedure.

Yes it is permanent, long term follow up studies indicate that after the healing process is complete, eyesight remains stable. Some patients may develop the need for reading glasses as they age but this happens to most adults regardless of whether or not they get laser vision correction.

After your surgery
Laser Eye Surgery truly is life changing, and in the aftermath there’s so much to look forward to - great vision, no more of the inconveniences that glasses and contacts can sometimes bring either as well as a new found confidence. But what about your post surgery aftercare? This topic often weighs heavy on patients, and rightly so.

Once you’ve had your surgery, it’s time to relax and let the Optilase medical team
explain everything about the aftercare programme. Remember that at Optilase, you’re in the best hands possible. The team will give you a post-operative information pack containing eye drops and a schedule of when to take them. Introduced in the 1980s, Laser Eye Surgery has improved and restored vision for these millions of people who have until their treatment, often relied on glasses or contacts for years, and then, post-recovery, enjoyed a life free from glasses and contacts.

The surgery is painless, quick and recovery time too is short. Interested in finding out more? We spoke to Optilase, Ireland’s No.1 Laser Eye Surgery providers for the low down on the options available.

Laser Eye Surgery - Quick explainer
Laser eye surgery corrects poor vision, giving you freedom from glasses and contact lenses, so you can live your life to the full. It's a simple procedure that takes anything from a matter of seconds to just a few minutes, depending upon the level of correction that's required, but you'll notice an improvement in your vision after laser eye surgery which is truly remarkable.

A cool beam advanced laser makes subtle adjustments to the shape of the surface of your eye (the cornea), correcting its tiny imperfections and making your vision clearer and sharper. The vast majority of patients are amazed at how quickly they recover and the speed at which they can enjoy a life free from glasses and contact lenses.

How will I know if I am suitable for the procedure?
While most people will be suitable for Laser Eye Surgery, there will also be a number of people who will not. Generally there are a number of factors that may make you unsuitable for laser vision correction - include prescriptions stronger than -10 or +5, or having a squint or a lazy eye. For women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is necessary to wait for 6 months postpartum before starting your treatment.

If you’re still not sure if you would be a suitable candidate for the procedure then the best thing to do to determine your suitability is to go to a provider that offers a free laser eye surgery consultation.

Optilase Ireland’s premier provider of Laser Eye Surgery, offers a free consultation with every Laser Eye Surgery enquiry. They told us what you can expect at one of their free Eye consultations, ‘At the free consultation one of our Laser Optometrists will carry out a series of eye examinations to determine your suitability. The Laser Optometrist will then explain in detail the processes involved and answer any questions you may have. The whole assessment takes approximately one hour to complete. At the end of the consultation a pre-operative consultation is then arranged with your Surgeon.

At the pre-operative consultation , your Surgeon will talk you through the technical aspects of your laser eye surgery and resolve any additional questions or queries. Then all that’s left to do is book in for your surgery. A real life changing moment awaits you, it will be something you will never regret.

Options - LASIK or LASEK
The experts in Optilase offer two types of Laser Eye procedures called LASIK and LASEK/PRK. The key difference between these procedures involves the method of preparing the cornea. LASEK, also referred to as PRK, was the first type of laser eye surgery for vision correction and is the predecessor to the popular LASIK procedure.

Laser Eye Surgery - Type 1 - LASIK
CEO of Optilase, Phillip McGlade explains that LASIK is the most commonly performed laser eye surgery procedure, with over 90% of suitable patients choosing this treatment, ‘LASIK is our most popular type of laser eye surgery and offers benefits including a fast recovery and excellent visual outcomes.’

So how does it work? LASIK treatment involves creating a very thin circular ‘flap’ in this outer layer of the cornea, using a laser surgical tool. In LASEK surgery, instead of using a laser, the surgeon simply loosens the top layer of cells of the cornea using a special solution.

The recovery time for LASIK patients is speedy too, allowing you to start living life to the full almost straight away.

Laser Eye Surgery - Type 2 - LASEK
LASEK is an alternative type of laser eye surgery for patients who are not suitable for LASIK treatment. The main difference between both treatments is that with LASIK, a corneal flap is created and replaced, and with LASEK, the top layer of the cornea is loosened, moved, and reattached.

Is it long lasting or actually permanent?
Yes, long term follow up studies indicate that after the healing process is complete, eyesight remains stable. Some patients may develop the need for reading glasses as they age but this happens to most adults regardless of whether they get laser vision correction.

Need a little help?
It might all sound a little confusing but don’t worry, once you book an initial consultation, you’ll be tested for suitability and the right treatment for you will be offered. Of course when we had a little less time on our hands, it was hard to make sure we looked after everything. Because now that we have the time, there really is no better time than the present to make the plans you’ve always wanted to and that will enhance our lives.

Your journey with Optilase begins when you attend your initial assessment. One of our Laser Optometrists will meet with you and spend the next hour thoroughly examining and testing your eyes. You will find out if you are a suitable candidate, what treatment will be best for your eyes, and how much exactly it will cost. It’s important to note that you will not be able to drive after your assessment for at least 6-8 hours.

How long does the treatment take?
The laser vision correction itself takes around 7 minutes per eye. Between preparation, treatment and aftercare, you should expect to stay in the clinic for up to 2 hours on the day of your procedure.

Is it long lasting or actually permanent?
Yes, long term follow up studies indicate that after the healing process is complete, eyesight remains stable. Some patients may develop the need for reading glasses as they age but this happens to most adults regardless of whether they get laser vision correction.

Will the surgery make my eyes look different?
No, there is no permanent change in the appearance of your eyes. The day after surgery your eyes should be white and clear. The healing process can take 4-5 days and during this time your eye may appear slightly red at times.
