How will I know if I am suitable for Laser Eye Surgery?
In short, it’s impossible to really know without visiting us for an initial assessment. Generally though there are a number of factors that may make you unsuitable for laser vision correction - include prescriptions stronger than -10 or +5, or having a squint or a lazy eye. For women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is necessary to wait until 6 months before starting your treatment.
Is it permanent?
Yes, long term follow up studies indicate that after the healing process is complete, eyesight remains stable. Some patients may develop the need for reading glasses as they age but this happens to most adults regardless of whether they get laser vision correction.
How long does the treatment take?
The laser vision correction itself takes around 7 minutes per eye. Between preparation, treatment and aftercare, you should expect to stay in the clinic for up to 2 hours on the day of your procedure.
What complications can occur?
There are some risks involved in laser vision correction, you will be made aware of these risks during your initial free assessment as well as your pre-operative consultation. The most common side effects of laser vision correction include dry-eye, night-time glare, halo effect and regression.
I’m interested in finding out more - what happens at my initial assessment?
Your journey with Optilase begins when you attend your initial assessment. One of our Laser Optometrists will meet with you and spend the next hour thoroughly examining and testing your eyes. You will find out if you are a suitable candidate for laser vision correction, what treatment will be best for your eyes, and how much exactly it will cost. The whole assessment just takes around one hour to complete, and then it’s onto the next step which is organising a pre-operative consultation with your surgeon.

At the consultation you will meet your Surgeon who will carry out a further eye exam and give the final approval required for surgery to go ahead. Then they’ll talk you through the technical aspects of your laser eye surgery and resolve any additional questions or queries.

Following the operation, you can relax while our nurses explain everything about the aftercare programme. Having problems with your near vision can be very frustrating. Everyday tasks like reading a text or checking a bill in a coffee shop can become awkward or annoying. The good news is that if you do suffer with near vision problems, Reading Vision Correction might just be the answer.
Here are three telltale signs that the treatment might just be what you’ve been looking for all along.
You have trouble reading fine print clearly
You’ll notice this with newspapers, mobile phone texts, labels on jars, etc. and find yourself holding objects at arm’s length to try to focus clearly on them. It happens to everyone, usually between the ages of 40-65.
You’re over 40 and have near sight problems
Are you aged between 40 and 65? As we get older, we lose our near vision. The technical term for this loss of crispness and clarity of near vision is ‘presbyopia’. Presbyopia, the loss of ability to focus on near objects as the eye ages, happens when the eye’s natural lens loses its flexibility and stiffens with age.
You can’t do without your reading glasses
Presbyopia is the reason that reading glasses become necessary, even for people who have excellent distance vision. It’s an inevitable condition, whether people have had previous laser eye surgery or not. People with presbyopia have difficulty reading menus, phones, newspapers, magazines, labels, watches and other objects close-up.

Fed up of the limits that come with wearing glasses? It might just be time for you to find out a little more about Laser Eye Surgery, the quick and painfree life changing treatment that is performed every day in Ireland’s most trusted eye clinic, Optilase. So, what are the main things to find out about? Let’s have a look at what anyone considering Laser Eye Treatment should know.
The basics - What does Laser Eye Surgery do?
Laser Eye Surgery is a way of permanently correcting your vision. The procedure uses a special type of laser to gently reshape the surface of the eye in order to correct certain vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism (distorted vision).
Over 30 million people worldwide have chosen to undergo this quick, painless and yet life-changing procedure, to achieve 20/20 vision. Laser eye surgery gives you the opportunity to live a life free from the inconvenience and cost of having to wear glasses and contact lenses.
The science bit - Are there different types of Laser Eye Surgery?
Yes, there are two types of laser eye procedures called LASIK and LASEK/PRK. The key difference between these procedures involves the method of preparing the cornea. LASEK, (also referred to as PRK) was the first type of laser eye surgery for vision correction and is the predecessor to the popular LASIK procedure.
LASIK laser eye surgery treatment involves creating a very thin circular ‘flap’ in this outer layer of the cornea, using a laser surgical tool (femtosecond laser). In LASEK surgery, instead of using a laser, the surgeon simply loosens the top layer of cells of the cornea using a special solution.

If you are aged between 40-75 and find reading everyday items like a text on your phone, the newspaper, a price tag or menus a stretch or strain then it’s possible that you are suffering from something called presbyopia. Presbyopia is when we lose our near vision, and it happens to many people as we reach middle age or get older.
Without a doubt suffering from eye strain or vision blur like this can be very frustrating and at times debilitating, so what is the answer ?
Reading Vision Correction
Many people with these symptoms who are tired of not being able to see or read these everyday items with ease, get a treatment called Reading Vision Correction performed. Under this procedure, there are two treatment options available - Kamra and Presbia, both of which are offered at Optilase, Ireland’s No.1 Eye Surgery Clinic.
What are my options?
Both the Kamra and Presbia treatment options use what’s called a ‘corneal inlay’. The most suitable treatment for you will be discussed at a consultation with one of Optilase’s experienced Optometrists taking your current prescription and lifestyle into account. Both treatments are entirely painless and take on average, less than 10 minutes, allowing you to resume most activities the very next day.
Is everyone eligable for Reading Vision Correction?
No, unfortunatley not everyone is a suitable candidate for Reading Vision Correction.
Generally, Presbyopia is quite a specific issue, and it only affects people over 40.
The condition is solely due to ageing of the eye, so if you are younger than 40 and you have issues with close vision, you’re better suited for laser eye surgery, as your problems require a correction of the cornea. If you are older than 65, it is possible that you have complications other than presbyopia which alter your underlying prescription needs – for instance, cataracts.
Find the right solution for your eye concerns
If you are in any doubt about what might be the best solution for your eye concerns, don’t worry. A simple call to the team at Optilase will set up a one to one consultation with an experienced Optometrist who will assess your concerns and put a plan in action for you.

Laser Eye Surgery - Fact or Fiction?
Deciding to start your Laser Eye Surgery journey is a big decision, and like most big decisions our mind can work overtime when we fear the unknown. And that’s entirley understandable.

Laser Eye Surgery is Painful - FICTION
The good news is that the laser vision correction is painless. During the procedure your eye is numbed using anaesthetic drops and you are offered Diazepam to reduce any anxiety you may have as well as to relax muscle tension. Depending on your treatment type, there can be some discomfort in the days after your treatment but this is generally temporary and in most cases will be very mild. So no, there’s no need to worry about pain.
Both eyes can be treated on the same day - FACT
Due to advancements in Laser Eye Surgery, it is perfectly safe to treat both eyes on the same day. In total, it takes approximately 10-15 minutes to have both eyes treated. If for any reason you would prefer to have your eyes treated separately, the team in Optilase can arrange this for you at no extra charge, but equally most patients like to get both eyes done together.
Eyes look different after Laser Eye Surgery - FICTION
No, there is no permanent change in the appearance of your eyes after the procedure. The day after surgery, your eyes should be white and clear. The overall healing process can take 4-5 days and during this time the eye may appear slightly red, this is perfectly normal.
